| The Chateauguay-Léry Forest in the Municipal Election Race |
| The Greenness of the Candidates: Commitment Summary |
| |
| The management of a municipality begins with managing the development of its territory: where the citizens’ daily lives take place. For the benefit of the voters concerned with the total conservation of their forest, SOS Forêt-Fernand-Seguin verified the level of commitment of the 44 Léry and Chateauguay candidates.
All received a questionnaire containing the necessary steps to achieve this. Click here to read its commitments,
for Châteauguay
for Léry.
To verify the consistency of the candidates’ commitments, public statements and electoral programs were examined, as well as writing an opinion (Chateauguay only) regarding the summer public consultation.
Results of this exercise clearly denote the greenness of the candidates for the positions of mayor and councillor. For Chateauguay, 23/27 candidates returned the questionnaire, 6/17 did so for Léry. |

| From Green to White |
 |
The citizens have already clearly expressed their willingness to fully protect the Chateauguay-Léry Forest as reflected by the 10,000 signatories of the petition and by 92% of the written opinions during the summer public consultation.
These clear words struck a chord with just over one third of committed candidates who, in addition, were able to keep their statements coherent since the beginning of the campaign.
As for the others, by checking their election platforms and their public statements since their entry into the municipal election race, we can only stress the weakness and even lack of coherence in regard to the protection of the Chateauguay-Léry Forest.
SOS Forêt Fernand-Seguin hopes that this candidate greenness commitment analysis will enable Léry and Chateauguay voters to make an informed choice this November 1st. |

| Chateauguay: 4 groups |
 |
1. Thus, in this first group, among the nine following candidates, the great majority filed a written opinion favouring the total conservation of the forest and have also accepted the seven commitments proposed by the questionnaire. In addition, their statements in the written press, as well as their election program, have included:
- full preservation of the forest,
- recognition of the value of the summer public consultation,
- support for the Héritage Saint-Bernard report,
- endorsement for the creation of a municipal tourism and recreational area.

3. In this third group, no written opinion was presented during the public consultation. The ten candidates checked 'yes' (unless indicated by an asterisk (*): no response provided for certain commitments or no statements given). Some public statements repeatedly weakened the strength of their commitments by invoking instead:
- the revitalization as a substitute for the full protection of the natural area,
- doubt concerning the value of the public consultation and proposing another,
- non-recognition of the competence of the parties already involved in the protection dossier (SOS Forêt Fernand-Seguin and Héritage Saint-Bernard, among others) preferring a citizens’ committee with unclear objectives.

| Notes: |
A single questionnaire was returned by the Michel Énault Team with this general comment: Ce questionnaire a été rempli avec la collaboration de tous les candidats conseillers et Michel Énault.
Furthermore, the following comment was added to the Commitment 1, and it seems that private lands will not be included under the moratorium:
Oui pour tout terrain appartenant à la ville et nous nous engageons à faire tout ce qui est en notre pouvoir pour protéger et empêcher tout développement immobilier. |

4. The last group consists of four candidates that did not return their questionnaire. We deem they are not committed to the full preservation of the Chateauguay-Léry Forest. We stress here the contents of public statements made by Mr. Boffice, reflecting the following concerns:
- equation "real estate development • taxes • profitability,"
- referendum proposed with no regard to the value of the latest public consultation.

| 3. The last group consists of the 11 candidates that did not return the questionnaire. We deem they have chosen to not commit to the full preservation of the Chateauguay-Léry Forest. More specifically, in the case of the seven candidates associated with Walter Letham’s team, they are concentrating their intentions on private properties disregarding any other available possibilities of conservation or of any land belonging to Transport Quebec and already public domain. |
